Summary edit
DescriptionAlveolar proteinosis, PAS stain (13383493953).jpg |
The alveoli are filled with granular eosinophilic surfactant-derived phospholiids and proteinaceous material. This material is characteristically PAS positive as seen in this image. Alveolar proteinosis is the result of defective surfactant clearance from the alveoli due to macrophage dysfunction often associated with immunodeficiency states. Contributed by Philip Kane, MD |
