| Description |
Voyager 2 narrow angle camera frame of Amalthea, taken near its closest approach of 560,000 km at 1934UT on July 9, 1979. This frame is a composite of two images: a severely overexposed frame capturing detail on Amalthea's surface, and frame capturing Amalthea's sihouette against Jupiter's cloudtops. It has been colorized using an orange/violet image pair taken around 1750 UT with the wide-angle camera. Amalthea has been artificially colored using a global average color derived from the Galileo mission. Amalthea is shaped like an American football, measuring 250 km x 145 km x 128 km. Here, Voyager is looking along the moon's long axis, making it appear round. The moon is tidally locked to Jupiter, and its long axis points perpendicular to Jupiter's cloudtops.
