SOME FLORIDA PECULIARITIES. 367 ctation. These islands arc said to have been sur-rounded by the sea in bygone ages, and they thenstood in the same rehition to the niainhxnd as do thepresent Southern Florida reefs and keys. Widetracts of cypress swamp separate the evergladesfrom the Gulf of Mexico, while in Southern Floridathey approach within a few miles of the AtlanticCoast, being separated by an intervening dyke ofcoral, crossed by frecpient streams of rapid current, for the everglades arc fnv from being stagnantswamps. There are also many other extensiveswamps in the State. The Florida seacoast is usually protected by sandbeaches which are quite hard, and are separatedfrom the mainland by interior lagoons. The man-grove and the coral, constantly growing, are ever en-croaching, however, on the sea-waters, and thusFlorida seems to have been constructed. The coun-try is full of water courses, lakes and springs, someof the latter being regarded as among the most re-markable in the world
