The Reading systemalso sends its East Pennsylvania route eastward toAUentowu in tlu; Lehigh A^alley, and thence to NewYork. Factory smokes overhang Reading, throughwhich the Schuylkill flows in crooked course, spannedby frequent bridges, and puffing steam jets on allsides show the busy industries. A good district sur-rounds Reading in the mountain valleys, and thethrifty Dutch farmers in large numbers come intothe town to trade. The high forest-clad mountainsrise precipitously on both sides, with electric railwaysrunning up and around them, disclosing magnificentviews.
