gs, without thought of himand his age, not very remarkable. One little cut (here poorly reproduced) shows an exceptionalminuteness and delicacy. But there is not enough in any of them to command much admira-tion simply as graver-work. And the same may be not unfairly said even of the work of hisprime. The copies of Bewick (the staple of his best work) are wonderful, having regard to the circumstances in which they were produced; but no ap-preciator of Bewick could speak of them as worthy ofcomparison with the originals. They are curiously goodcopies, valuable pioneer work, helps toward better. Afterthese early things there is little improvement. I find onlythe two large cuts standing out as marks of a capacitywhich had not corresponding development. Such cuts as are given in the Memorial, not copies, butaltogether his own work, (allowing that there may not have been much opportunity for choice,)bear out this judgment.
