1 ton, to which is riveted theheavy sheet-iron house, and which is also provided with anumber of lugs that serve to keep from shifting forty-five50-Ib. weights, all scaled to U. S. standard, and which areused to test small scales. In the sheet-iron house are keptvarious necessary tools, extra springs, journal bearings, brake-shoes, etc., all of which are in the car when it is scaled on thestandard scales at Potlstown, Pa., once every month, orofteuer,if necessary. In case of the breakage of any of the aboveparts, the old is put into the house, and the new, taken there-from, put into service, and the weight thus kept as near con-stant as possible. To the under side of the body are boltedthe pedestals and brake-cylinders, the only important fixturesof the car which are not a part, of the body casting The caris carried by four 36-in. steel tired Boise wheels mounted onsteel axles having 4£ X 8 in. journals, the wheel-base being5 ft. 4 in.
