aweight that the adjustment takes more time than should beconsumed in doing the work. To save time at this point, anoverhead track has been put up, and from a couple of trolleysrunning on them there hang two rods fitted with turnhucklesby which the jacks can be lifted from the floor and run alongthe side of the engine to the point where it is desired to usethem. Then, in order to avoid the heavy straining and delaysincident to lining the wheels and getting them upon the trackover which the engine is standing, there is a ram in the floorjust beyond the end of the engine which is used to lift the wheels from the door while they are swung around into line.This ram is operated by compressed air. Every man who has had to do with locomotive repairing hasbeen troubled to a greater or less extent by the inadequacy ofthe means of handling the heavy parts that must be removedeven in cases where only partial repairs are made. The form of this track isclearly shown in the engraving, and it will he seen that withthe hoist travelling over this track everything on and aboutthe front end of the locomotive can be lifted and lowered tothe floor, thus doing away with the necessity for a large gangof laborers, whose sole duty is to tire themselves and every oneelse with their heavy lifting. In order to handle the otherparts that are located further back and out of reach of thishoist, such as the dome caps, air pumps, etc.. there is anothertrack that is pivoted over the back end of the cab, ar.d whichitself travels on a trolley running on a circular track just backof the stack. On this track there is a chain hoist that can bemade to coverall of the back end of the engine ; and. after thepart to be removed is swung free, it is run forward and broughtout far enough to clear the engine and lowered to the Boor.Tims the man doing the work, with the assistan
