These horses are noted for great strength and endurance, being much used for draft.They are usually fifteen and a half, or sixteen and a half hands high, altliough some of thelarger types of the breed are occasionally seventeen hands. In temperament they are sanguine,mixed in variable proportions with the musco-lymphatic. In color they are quite uniform,being nearly always gray, although occasionally other colors, such as the black, roan, bay, orchestnu.t, are seen. It is estimated by good authority that fully ninety per cent, of them,both in this country and France — from where they are imported — are gray. They arelarge animals, those imported to this country ranging in weight from 1400 to 1900 lbs. Theygenerally have a good head, mild, expressive eyes, rather short neck, denoting strength; highwithers, a broad, deep chest, short rump, sometimes slightly drooping, and body wellrounded. These horses are much used inthe Western States, while an infusion of the blood upon the common stock of the country isvery apparent in nearly all sections. It is to this blood that may be attributed largely theexcellence that distinguished the Canadian horses about half a century ago, this breed havingbeen introduced into Canada by the French settlers. While the Percheron-Norman horse is used principally for draft and heavy work, thelight or smaller types are frequently employed upon the road. The result of a cross with thisbreed upon the common horses of the country has been found very satisfactory in producingan improvement in strength, and hardiness.
