ewport, was one James Martin. He was the son ofSir Richard Martin, and was born about 1560-1565. Hehad commanded the Benjamin in Drakes voyage of1585-1586, but from 1606 became identified with the historyof Virginia. In 1616 he received from the Virginia Com-pany a grant of ten shares of land in Virginia, which inthe following year he located at Martins Brandon on theJames. The patent covering this grant was very broad; hewas to enjoye his landes in as lardge and ample manner, toall intentes and purposes, as any Lord of any Manours inEngland dothe holde his grounde; and it was the cause ofthe first contest in America on charter rights between TheFirst House of Burgesses and their loving friend, CaptainJohn Martin, Esquire, Master of the Ordnance, a contestthat took Martin back to England more than once and whichprovoked much contention in the colony for many years. The original deed to Captain Martin is still in the possessionof the present owner of the plantation, Mrs. Gulie C. Governor Parke Evelyn Byrd Colonel William Byrd 33° AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS September, 1907 son, who has many later deeds, including those toNathaniel Harrison dated 1698, 1720, 1724and 1725. The date of Captain Martins death is un-known, but at least he was living in 1626-1627;his grave, which is doubtless at Brandon, is un-known and unmarked. The connection betweenMartin and the Harrisons is not clear. An En-sign Harrison, who was probably Harmon Har-rison, came to Virginia in 1608, and was com-plained of, together with Captain Martin, beforethe First Assembly in 1619. It is possible therewas a relationship between the two men, but itis at least certain that Brandon, with its ten thou-sand acres, passed into the Harrison family, andbecame completely identified with it, for at a veryearly time it became their ancestral home. The earliest buildings on the plantation werelong since swept away to make room for the pres-ent stately mansion, commenced, doubtless, byColonel Nathaniel H
