Text Appearing Before Image:
March, 1911 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS too long for general use, would be suitable for a frieze or to run above a dado of a large dining-room:— "We may live without poety, music and art; We may live without conscience, and live without heart; We may live without friends, we may live without books, But civilized men cannot live without cooks. We may live without books—what is knowledge but griev- ing? We may live without hope—what is hope but deceiving? We may live without love—what is passion but pining? But where is the man who can live without dining?" In a room that has a dinner bell in a permanent place LIBRARY Mottoes in a library as a rule should apply to books, or have a somewhat intellectual thread running through them. One of the accompanying illustrations shows a delightful little corner seat of a simple library. Under the book shelves built above the seat are carved these words from Chaucer:— "And as for me, though that I konne but lyte, On bokes for to rede I me delyte." "Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much; Wisdom is humble that he knows no more." —Coivper.
Text Appearing After Image:
A motto is placed over a seat in the den these words by Byron would be appropriate, if applied either on the wall near the bell, or on the stand upon which it is kept:— "That all-softening, overpowering knell, The tocsin of the soul—the dinner bell." "He that banquets every day, never makes a good meal." These lines from Burns make a charming motto for a dining-room:— "Some hae meat and canna' eat, And some wad eat who want it; But we hae meat and we can eat, So let the Lord be thankit." —Burns. "Absence of occupation is not rest, A mind quite vacant is a mind distress'd." —Cozvper. "There is no friend so faithful as a good book." "Choose an author as you choose a friend." "Books should to one of these four ends conduce, For wisdom, piety, delight or use." "Reading maketh a full man, Conference a ready man, and Writing an exact man." "Dreams, books, are each a world; and books we know, —* . -
