The hotel, the mail carrier told us, was kept by aGerman, who, he assured us, had plenty of goodSante Fe beer, which, considering the distance it hadto be brought, was considered a great luxury. The German proprietor proved a most genial host,and, as he ushered us in to supper, soon after our ar-rival, we took the places assigned us at the table, wherethe other guests of the hotel had already assembled. Itwas a mixed company that sat around the board. Thevillage doctor, a young man from the East, the blacksmith, the editor of the weekly paper 7\ms Herald,several miners, some gentlemen of leisure about town,our host and his family and ourselves the latest ar-rivals. In front of thu hall, beside the bar-room, was thehotel office, separated from the dining-room only bya light partition extending about as high as a manshead. The hotel itself is a one-story adobe structure,built, as are most Alexican houses, around a smallcourtyard, upon which the rooms face. Our first glimpse next morning was of the beauti-ful snow-tipped mountains glistening in the sunlight,with Taos Peak, which is twelve thousand feet abovethe level of the sea, towering above them all. We decided to spend the day sight-seeing in the oldtown, and devote the remainder of our time to thepueblo. Our guide, the editor, told us many interest-ing things concerning the place, and pointed out theseveral buildings, the most prominent of which wasTaos Bank, the oiilv wooden structure in the town.Beyond the bank
