Description

Alaskite granite dike in amphibolite from the Precambrian of Montana, USA.

Igneous dikes are planar to irregularly-planar igneous intrusions that cut across country rocks. They can be thin or extremely thick & they can be vertical or obliquely-oriented.

The light-colored dike shown above is composed of alaskite, which is a granitic rock with such a low mafic mineral content that it looks like it's composed of just quartz and potassium feldspar.

The dark-colored host rock is amphibolite, an amphibole-rich, foliated metamorphic rock. The original precursor rock to amphibolite is usually basalt. The amphibolite is Neoarchean in age - apparently ~2.7 Ga.

Locality: loose piece from roadcut on the northwestern side of Rt. 212 (Beartooth Highway), ~0.1 miles southwest of milepost 62, northeastern Rock Creek Canyon, southwest of the town of Red Lodge, Beartooth Mountains, southern Montana, USA (45º 05' 33.01" North latitude, 109º 19' 11.41" West longitude)
