Summary edit

Description

Text from museum placard: A funerary slab of Hilarus, archon of the Volumnenses synagogue, probably situated in Trastevere. The synagogue derives its name from its patron, by some he is identified as Volmnius, procurator of Syria at the time of Augustus, who had dealt with jewish problems. Underneath the text there are jewish symbols of shofar, the ritual horn, lulav, a palm branch, these allude the feast of Tabernacles, the cabinet (aron) containing the scrolls of laws (Torah), along with an oil vase and two unleavened loaves of bread.
