two accounts. Sir JohnMalcolm states that they were Suclras of the tribe ofKiimbi, or cultivators, and he tlius describes the rise ofthe man who first made it famous :— Eanoji Sindhia, hewrites/ the first wlio became eminent as a soldier, hadsucceeded to his hereditary office of Headman, or Patel,of Kumerkerrah, in tlie district of Wye, before he wastaken into the service of the Peshwa Ballaji Bishwanath, after whose death he continued in that of his sou BajiraoBuUal. The humble employment of Eanoji was to carrythe Peshwas slippers ; but being near the person of thechief minister of an empire in any capacity is deemed anhonour in India. GWAMAR. 137 is imputed to accident. It is stated that Bajirao, on chap. coming out from a long audience ■with the Sahu Eaja, found Eiinoji asleep on his back, with the slippers of hismaster clasped with fixed hands to his breast. The ex-treme care of so trifling a charge struck Biijirao forcibly;he expressed his satisfaction, and, actuated by motivescommon to men in the enjoyment of such power, he im-mediately appointed Eanoji to a station in the pagah orbodyguard. ^ This somewhat sensational story, though generallybeheved, has not been altogether unquestioned. Awriter, who, though anonymous, had evidently access tothe best sources of information, and whose work - wasread over and emended prior to publication by such highauthorities as Mountstuart Elphinstone and Grant Duff, ventures to doubt it. His account of the origin of theSindhia family is as follows :— The Sindhia family, hewrites, were Patels of Kumerkheir, near Sattara, and, inthe absence of other information, we may judge
