he Nashville continued the chase and then fired another shotwhich apparently passed within a rod of the Spaniards bow,and the captain quickly reversed the engines and hauled downthe Spanish ensign. She was boarded by a half-dozen menfrom the Nashville, and was found to be the steamship BuenaYenlura, plying between Xew York and AYest Indian ports.The captain said he did not know that war had been declared,but she was sent to Key AYest, where much excitement pre-vailed over the first shot of the war. The blockading squadron arrived off Havana towards even-ing of the same day; the red light was lighted in Morro Castletower and three shots were fired as a signal that the Americansliad appeared. Havana armed itself at once in anticipation ofattack, not understanding our more peaceful intentions forthe time being. Two ships were taken atthe mouth of Havana harbor, indeed almost under the guns ofMorro Castle. The President was disposed to release allSpanish prizes taken during these first days of the war in con-sideration of the notice given by Spain allowing Americanvessels in Spanish ports freely to depart, but he waited to seeif Spain were acting in good faith. As a matter of fact, therewere no American vessels in Spanish ports, except possibly afew pleasure yachts, and Spains action might have been foreffect and for the very purpose of placing our seizures ofSpanish ships in as bad a light as possible.
