And now it was, in the time of peace, that Alfredbegan to do great things for his people, the things bywhich he earned his name of Alfred the Great. Hecollected the laws and wrote them out so that peoplecould understand them. He did away with the lawswhich he thought were bad, and made others. One lawhe made was, that a man who had done wrong could notbe punished unless twelve men agreed that he really hadbeen wicked, and ought to be punished. This was calledtrial by jury, and means trial by those who have promisedto do justly. Our word jury comes from a Latin wordwhich means to promise or swear.
