DescriptionAncient Green Lane ... abandoned and forgotten - geograph.org.uk - 1307547.jpg |
English: Ancient Green Lane ... abandoned and forgotten. This small length of the lane that remains now starts nowhere and goes nowhere ..... it is located in isolation in the middle of a grazing field. Its position is marked on the 1:25,000 OS map. The main road (the old turnpike road) passes very close to it but contours just below it and one can be sure that this small section of green lane is unlikely to have been noticed by most of the passengers in cars as they whisk passed.
The local farmer confirmed that it is believed to be part of the old trading route from Hackney Marches (near the Passage House Inn) which climbs steeply up the hill to White Well which was presumably a welcome watering place on the way across Haldon via the ancient trading route known and marked on the OS maps as 'Port Way' to Exminster on the River Exe. The Steward to the Lord of the Manor of Newton Abbot, Michael Martyn, advised that the green lane in question is part of the previously mentioned 'Port Way', a long distance trade route whose name derives from the Saxon word "port" meaning market. It is believed to have been established in Celtic times, a period sometimes termed 'Ancient British' or just 'British'; but Michael Martyn advises that documentary evidence of its origins is lacking, hence the addition of the word "probably" or "possibly" on the old O.S. maps of the area. The photo shows this remaining section of the old trading route fenced off with electric fencing to keep the sheep off the lane whilst the grass regrows. 1307595 |
