S. Francisco Xavier despedindo-se de D. João III antes da viagem para a Índia. O rei está ao centro, tomando as mãos do santo e, ao lado, encontra-se o Padre Simão Rodrigues, introdutor da Companhia de Jesus em Portugal. A receção decorre no Paço da Ribeira, vendo-se o Tejo ao fundo, e a corte é composta por membros do clero e da nobreza, incluindo membros das três ordens militares, identificadas pelas respetivas cruzes: Cristo, Santiago e Avis. D. João III tinha pedido missionários a Santo Inácio de Loyola para evangelização da Índia, que inicialmente designou Afonso de Bobadilha. Este adoeceu e a escolha veio a recair em São Francisco Xavier.
