Summary edit

Description
English: Andrews Field. Andrews Field is unique among U.K WW2 airfields in that it was not named after the parish or local village but after Lt Gen Frank Andrews who was killed in a flying accident. There is a rather more prestigious airbase in Maryland USA that is home to Air Force One named in tribute to the same officer. Great Sailing / Andrews Field was the first U.S built airfield to become operational in the UK during May 1942. After a brief stay of B17’s the base was used mainly by B26’s. The current private field was licensed in 1976 and named Andrewsfield rather than Andrews Field, I assume so AF1 doesn’t get confused! To go to the next field in an alphabetical tour of Essex WW2 airfields go to 64290.

Much information was gleaned from Graham Smith’s book “Essex Airfields In The Second World War”.
