Angling from boat at Danube Backwater in Tolna Alta-Ripa Szabadidőpark (~Alta-Ripa Leisure Park). The people of Tolna have been fishing the Danube for centuries. A 16th-century record from Tolna describes carp weighing 15 kg, wide and thick, "equivalent to a pig in fatness". Open channel fishing required considerable expertise and more sophisticated tools. However, fish could be caught in the so-called 'fokok' (lit. capes), i.e. in the natural way of the river or in the "outlet" ditches created by human hands. The 'fokok' were also filled with fish during flooding. Before the fish withdrew, the channels were blocked and the remaining fish were caught relatively easily.
