r of Breathing.—The breathing of fishes isa very simple* process. All the air they require is con-tained in the water, which enters freely at the mouth,passes over the gills, and escapes at the gill-slit. Theblood continually circulating through the gills absorbsoxygen from the water and becomes purified. Thisbreathing from water resembles the act of swallowing,with the important difference that the water passes to thegills, and not to the stomach. 10. We sometimes say, when a fish is taken out of theriver, that it dies for want of water. Strictly speaking, itwould be more correct to say that it dies for want of air.Surrounded as it is by air, the fish can make no use of it,because it is not mixed with water, and the poor creat-ure flounces and throws itself uneasily about as it slowlysuffocates. 11.
