: commissioned by Gabriele Bombasi (1531-1602), Rome
Notes The deed of assignment of the chapel in the church of Santa Caterina della Rosa to Gabriele Bombasi is dated 11 December 1599. This suggests the commission is dated after December 1599, but it might also have been a reworking of an earlier work by Annibale, started in Bologna (Ghelfi, 2012). On seeing the work, Caravaggio remarked: "I am glad to still find a painter in my day" (Bellori, 1672, in Ghelfi, 2012).
