Healso, by express order of Congress, supervised the construc-tion of the new National Museum and was adviser in con-nection with the Corcoran Art Gallery, the new Statecapitol at Harrisburg, and with notable private structures.His opinion has been constantly sought in an informal wayon other projects of construction, governmental and private. Since the completion of the Library Building he has beenin charge of it as superintendent (an appointee of thePresident), and also acted as disbursing officer of theLibrary and Botanic Gardens. This office carries with itthe duties not merely of the care of an elaborate buildingand priceless collections, and the administration of a largeforce of engineers, electricians, mechanics, and janitors, butthe design and construction of further equipment and ex-tensions, inevitable with the growing needs. The efficiencyof the Library itself has depended upon his efficiency andsympathetic cooperation. 620030—14. (To face page 6.)
