as a roommate. The whole system commends itself tostudents and patrons on account of its convenience, its health-fulness, and the moral modesty and privacy which it tends tocultivate. This arrangement leaves the entire floor space ofthe room available for other furniture, and thus adds much toits comfort and attractiveness as a place for study. Another large building adjacent to the Home is used forthe laundry, tent shop, carpenter shop, printing office, androoms for instrumental music practice. A blacksmith shop,tank house, engine house, dairy stables, and large barn com-plete the list of buildings belonging to the College. There isabundant provision for protection of the buildings against firefrom top to bottom, and fire escapes are provided for easy exitfrom the buildings in case a fire should occur. THE HOME LIFE. Past experience has demonstrated that the school can bemore successfully carried on by having the students boardand room in the college buildings with members of the l.i

HEALDSBURG COLLEGE. 13 ulty, thus constituting a large school family. Young peopleshould receive a much broader training than that which comesmerely from the study of books. Youth is the best time forthem to form habits of order, neatness, and Christian courtesy,and to obtain that general culture which comes from daily andintimate association with educated Christian teachers. To thisend much care is taken to render the home life not only at-tractive, but efficient in the cultivation of those habits of lifeand graces of character which distinguish the refined Christianman and woman. Teachers and students share one familylife, with common aims and interests. The regulations arereasonable, and are adapted to secure the highest good of allwho are thus associated together.
