en it dips rapidly be-low the overlying boulder clay, and dis-appears. All efforts to drill any distance downfrom the surface in the interior werefruitless. Six holes in all were tried, but none were successful in reachingwhat was supposed to be the level ofthe seam. All of these holes had to be(lug out with picks and shovels for adepth of six or eight feet down to passthe pebbly alluvium and quicksand ofthe Post-Glacial, and this part timber-ed. Then, when drilling did get start-ed on the boulder clay, it was alwayssure to be stopped by a stone beforeany depth had been attained. On the river bank itself wherever truelignite was exposed, we had compara-tively little trouble in drilling to findthe thickness of the coal. etc.. but inthe boulder clays, especially in the hardblack lignitic clay, it was absolutely im-possible: in fact, a short distance belowthe surface even the pick made verylittle impression on this material. (171) J 72 Bureau of Mines No. 5 working on it, it gave the impressionof having the consistency of hard, black India rubber. Test pits weresunk in it at intervals, but with a deptliof a few feet no increase in the quan-tity of lignite was observed. The thickness of lignite at variouspoints is interesting. At a point tVoleet from the waters edge on open-cutXIV., a bore hole showed a thicknessof three feet of coal, underlain by agrayish, smooth, plastic clay. At 21 feetfrom the water the thickness of lignitein the same open-cut is nine feet. Atthis point the lignite lies 5 feet be-low the brink of the bank, at the wat-ers edge 15 feet felow and at 34 feet4 inches in from the water, at 7 feetbelow the top of the bank; so that theremust be a sharp rise in the upper sur-face of the coal from the water to thefirst drill hole and then a gradual slopeinland. This may represent a thinningof the coal seam inland at this par-ticular point, or it maybe merely a localcorrugation. Very probably much
