The lignite of Ells bend is almostentirely formed from moss, though ata few points along the seam manysmall sticks occur between the layers. These sticks are but slightly carbonized, though squeezed almost flat parallel tothe bedding planes. The lignites liepractically in undisturbed horizontalpositions; though there may be a veryslight dip down stream. It is hardly probable that the ligniteof the Soweska is worth transportingto distant markets in southern Ontario, but there is no doubt that it will beeminently valuable as a fuel for thepeople wrho will undoubtedly inhabit thefertile valleys of the rivers which formthe Moose Basin. The fourth point where the ligniteoctirs on the Soweska lies almost twomiles and a quarter southwest of Ellsbend. The seam outcrops for about 2-10feet in a bank some 60 feet high. The

(167) J 68 Bureau of Mines No. 5 maximum thickness is about two feetfive inches. The quality is for the mostpart poor, being decidedly argillaceous. The bed is overlain in ascending orderby six feet of sand, over ten feet ofboulder clay, and eleven feet of stra-tilied marl which is decidedly consoli-dated and stands out in an overhang-ing cliff above the bank below. Beneaththe lignite lies the usual clay conglo-merate. The fifth point of occurrence of lig-nite is rather over a mile west of thelast described. Here a seam, mostly ofgood lignite, but with some decidedlyargillaceous material appears for a littleover 300 feet. The seam, which has athickness of two feet six inches, is over-lain by a boulder clay and marl-likesilt, and underlain by yellow, weather-ing sand. Numbers six is probably a continua-tion of number five. It appears on theopposite side of the river inthe next bend of the streamabove. The bed which varies inthickness from three feet three in-ches to four feet two inches
