Of the numerous Indians of this tribe near the Tomah Indianschool in Monroe county, Wisconsin, the school superintendent, underdate of August 25, 1898, wrote: The Winnebago Indians here arenearly all full-bloods, and they are about as far from civilization asthey were fifty years ago. The Winnebago in a winter villagenear Elroy, Juneau county, Wisconsin, in the winter of 1898-99, saidthat they now gather annualljdarge quantities of wild rice in the sloughsof the Mississippi at La Crosse, Wisconsin, and also on the Iowa sideof the stream. In 1812 it was said that there were 700 warriors, 1,000women, and 1,800 children, or a total of 2,800, while in 1820 therewere 900 warriors, 1,300 women, and 3,(500 children, a total of 5,800.*Probably 2.000 souls is a very conservati\-e estimate of the number ofIndians of this tribe who used wild rice during the period with whichthis memoir deals.
