Text Appearing Before Image:
form of a jointed arm, furnished at theextremity with nippers for securing itsprey. When not in use this instru-ment is neatly folded under the throatof the larva—it is called the mask (Fig 9). Then too, the peculiar ar-rangements by which the insect obtainsoxygen, its vital breath, fiom thewater, are worthy of notice. It hasno head gills, as the fish has; nobranchese like the larva of the HornedOorydalis ; no breathing tube like thatof the rat-tailed maggot of Eristalis. The respiratory organs lie within theabdomen, and the water is admitted tothem through an orifice furnished withfive angulated plates, which open orclose as need requires. Ordinarily theprocess of the alternate admission andexpulsion of the water goes on witheasy regularity ; but when the creatureis alarmed or stimulated by the sightof its prey, the water within its bodyis expelled with sudden force, and thetiny current, impinging upon the inertvolume around, sends the insect for-the air by the pressure of the gases
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 9.—The left figure represents the larva with its pro-truded lip in the act of seizing its prey ; the right showsthe perfect insect emerging from its pupal case. ward with a rush, as the rocket is sent through suddenly generated by the combustion of the materials with which the case is filled. The metamorphoses of the dragon-fly are incomplete, ^t the pupal change the insectdoes not become quiescent, nor does it cease to feed—it retains its active habits and vora-cious appetite. When the lime comes for it to assume the imago state, it climbs someplant or other object till it is clear above the surface, and then its skin bursts along thethor*x and the perfect insect crawls out of the opening and leaves its old habit, attachedby the claws, as a memorial of its former state. (See Fig. 9.) Having thus introduced the Odonata, and given some glimpses of their habits, wewill now notice their clasbification. They are divided into four families : Agrionid^, GoMPHiDiE, ^schnidje, and Li
