9 PLEISTOCENE. 481 mass rests on the upturned edges of the Miocene shales, which are veryfossiliferous and incline seaward at an angle of 20°. About 100 yardsfarther north the contact of the sand and shales is well exposed. PI.XI is from a photograph taken at this place, and fig. 12 is a section.The lowest portion of the Pleistocene rests, with marked unconformity,directly on the Miocene, and is composed of angular fragments of shaleand sandstone. The upper part of this layer is chiefly sand, partiallystratified, and contains wood, logs, limbs, and roots, some of whichlook as if they werestill in the placeswhere they grew.Much gravel and an-gular fragments aremixed with the sand.Succeeding layers(2) are composedchiefly of sand, withangular fragments and Small pieces Of Fig. 12.—Section of Nye Beach Cliff. 1, 20 feet of gray sands, wellWOOd.
