ains are in most cases very numerous, even on small fragments ofmatrix. Fifteen species of plants were identified from this locality, whichwill be found enumerated in the appendix on Paleobotany. After pushing tlieir tunnels to the distance stated, the vein was sud-denly cut off by a fault in the strata, and all attempts to recover itproved fruitless. The presence of a more or less active volcano in thenear vicinity rendered this result less surprising, as the Tertiary stratahave been subjected to much disturbance by comparatively modern vol-canic action along the line of this peninsula. An attempt to visit the locality of tlie now abandoned workings atHerendeen Bay was frustrated by the urgency of public business con-nected with the patrol of Bering Sea, which required the services of allthe cutters, on one of which we had expected to obtain transportation.
