These facts tend to show that the reputation of thehospital is extending, and that there are large numbers ofpeople in New England and beyond who would like to availthemselves of the use of the hospital if they were eligiblefor treatment. The South Department. The most notable event of the hospital year has been theopening of the new South Department for infectious diseases.Those who have followed the hospital reports for recentyears cannot have failed to observe the great discomfort andspread of infectious diseases among patients, nurses, andemployes in the general wards, by reason of the close prox-imity of these diseases to the general household. Happily,the completion and organization of the South Departmentwill remedy many of these difficulties. The gate lodge, dome-ticbuilding, and laundry building are for the general uses thatpertain to such buildings, in connection with a hospital.There is also a home for nurses, which is so arranged thatit is divided into two complete buildings, joining, butisolated from each other, and the stairways are so arrangedthat each floor is separate from the other floors. By thisarrangement, six sets of nurses are able to occupy the build-ing without coming in contact with each other.
