Summary edit

Description
English: Anorthosite with granite dike from the Precambrian of Wyoming, USA.

This rock is from the Sybille Pit, an old titanium mine in Wyoming's Laramie Range. The dark-colored material is anorthosite, an uncommon type of intrusive igneous rock that is almost exclusively composed of Ca-rich plagioclase feldspar. A blackish pyroxene component is usually also present. This lithology is abundant on the Moon, but uncommon on Earth. Some famous anorthosite localities include Labrador, the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, and Wyoming's Laramie Range.

The light-colored material is a granite dike that has intruded the host anorthosite. Igneous dikes are planar to irregularly-planar intrusions that cut across country rocks. They can be thin or extremely thick; they can be vertically- or obliquely-oriented. At the Sybille Pit, some of the granitic dikes are pegmatitic.

Geologic unit: Sybille Fe-Ti Oxide Deposit (Sybille Oxide Deposit), Laramie Anorthosite Complex, early Mesoproterozoic, 1.431 to 1.436 Ga

Locality: Sybille Pit, northern side of Sybille Canyon, Laramie Range, southeastern Wyoming, USA
