DescriptionAntikensammlung Wuerzburg 1771.JPG |
English: Relief fragment from limestone for the Dea Caelestis-Nutrix of the Roman province of Africa proconsularis (Tunisia), two sections separated by an ornamental band Relief fields, were only part of a larger stele, four naked young men in the picture box represent the four seasons (from left): winter (with pick and goose), spring (flower garland and flower basket), summer (sickle and sheaf of wheat) and autumn (grapes and basket), in the lower panel, the Judgment of Paris is to see: Paris sitting on a rock in front of a tree, in the outstretched hand Mercury (with wings on the head and caduceus) gave him an apple which he shall give to the winner of the judgment, on Mercury follows the naked Venus, then Juno with scepter and bowl and Minerva with shield and spear; formerly the stele was probably crowned by a picture of breastfeeding a child fertility goddess Caelestis-Nutrix, among the obtained image fields would have a field for the donor as well as a field with a bull as sacrifice symbol, but have marks show that the relief was unfinished there; 1st half 2nd century; former collection Schwerdhöfer, now Antikensammlung Würzburg, inventory number H 6187. |
