Description
English: A simple model of the working of the internal gears of the "epicyclic platform" of the Antikythera mechanism.

At the top is visible the k2 gear and at the bottom the e6 gear. Under the k2 gear is the k1 gear and under the e6 is the e5 gear. This all rests inside the e3/e4 gear set.

When rotating the e2 (other side of the model) gear the motion is transferred by the use of a hollow pin to the e5 gear which rotates the k1 gear.

The k1 gear and the k2 gear are coaxial (offset by 1.1 mm) so by the use of a pin on k1 in a slot in k2 the motion can be transferred to k2. By consequence of the offset the motion is faster when the pin is nearer to the centre of k2 and slower when nearer to the edge.

The motion is passed to the e6 gear and then through the whole system again which eventually makes the moon indicator rotate.

The irregular motion caused by the offset and moving pin-in-slot mimics the irregular motion of the moon as seen from earth.
