EXCAVATIONS AT NINEVEH. f °^ The s^s^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ■ 1 \\\ 287 chambers, and passages, for the most part wainscotedwith slabs of gray alabaster, sculptured with figuredin relief. The calcined limestone, and the great ac-cumulation of charred wood and charcoal, showedthat the building, or at least its roof, had been destroyed by fire. The mounds of Nimrud, notwithstanding their dis-tance f Iom the northern ruins, are believed by many tobe a part of Nineveh. These mounds are about 4 mile*in circumference and terminate at the northwest angleby a great mound 777 feet in circumference, and14:4: feet in hight, once coated with bricks. Some ofthese have been found, and are about the same size astht)se of Babylon, and are inscribed with the arrow-head characters. At the southeast angle of this en-closure is a group of fifty mounds, called by the Ara):)sthe mounds of Arthur.
