Summary edit

Description
English: Aplite (top) in quartz monzonite in the Cretaceous of Montana, USA.

Igneous dikes are planar to irregularly-planar igneous intrusions that cut across country rocks. They can be thin or extremely thick & they can be vertically- or obliquely-oriented.

The rock seen here is a loose piece in a mine waste rock pile in Butte, Montana. The lighter-colored area at the top is an igneous dike composed of aplite, which is finely-crystalline and granitic in composition. The speckled grayish areas are the host rock - Butte Quartz Monzonite (Late Cretaceous, 76 Ma),

Locality: Orphan Boy Mine, western side of the town of Butte, southwestern Montana, USA (vicinity of 46° 00' 42.36" North latitude, 112° 34' 05.50" West longitude)
