inside bearings, attached to stronglongitudinal bars, firmly fixed at the ends, to the fire and smokeboxes. The outside frame of this Engine, only differs from thosenow in general use by having the Pedestals cut out of the solidplates, instead of being attached to the frame by bolts and rivets. The method of applying the Steam, or working the Slide valves,is extremely ingenious, and appears to be very perfect; the comple-tion of so important an improvement must be of no small degree ofsatisfaction to the talented Inventors, whose several Improvementsconnected with Locomotive Engines are well known; the System ofworking the Slides by the four fast Eccentrics, instead of two looseones, was also first introduced by them in the Comet Engine, (thefirst Locomotive run upon the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway,)which has been fully appreciated, and consequently adopted by themost eminent Engineers of the present day.
