Flint Axes (Ascia lunata) from the Verona District (i) CONTINENTAL FORGERIES 6i national character with that of the human jaw of Moulin-Quignon. On the Italian side were ranged Chierici, DeStefani, Strobel, Pigorini, and Castelfranco—all archaeo-logists of the highest standing—none of whom had anyhesitation in accepting the Breonio finds as genuine relicsof some indefinable period of past ages. It is unnecessaryhere to dwell on the details of the successive skirmishesof these belligerents, as the forces finally withdrew with-out coming to any decision. Pigorini replied to the charge of falsification^ by statingthat De Mortillet had not properly qualified himself topronounce an ex cathedra opinion on the relics in ques-tion, as he had not seen the originals, nor visited thelocality, nor studied the deposits in which they werefound, nor seen any of them in situ.
