Description cyrptogamic soil at Arches National Park, Utah, USA. Cryptogamic or cryptobiotic soils are crusts of living organisms such as cyanobacteria, lichens and mosses that live on otherwise lifeless soils like open sand. In the colder parts of the high desert ecosystems on the Colorado Plateau they can amount to 70% of the living ground cover.
