Summary edit

Description
English: Archaeocyathan limestone in the Cambrian of South Australia.

This limestone outcrop is in South Australia's Fork Tree Limestone (Lower Cambrian). The unit has archaeocyathan fossils (= irregularly rounded/ovoid structures), which were described in 1990 (Debrenne & Gravestock. 1990. Archaeocyatha from the Sellick Hills Formation and Fork Tree Limestone on Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. Geological Society of South Australia Special Publication 16: 290-309.)

Archaeocyathans were sessile, benthic filter-feeding invertebrates that made a double-walled, calcareous skeleton. They are now considered to be an odd group of sponges. They formed bioherms (reefs) and are significant guide fossils in Lower Cambrian rocks.

Classification: Animalia, Porifera, Archaeocyatha

Stratigraphy: near the base of the Fork Tree Limestone, Normanville Group, lower Botomian Stage, middle Lower Cambrian

Locality: hillside exposure along Old Sellicks Hill Road, south-southeast of the town of Sellicks Hill, northern Fleurieu Peninsula, southeastern South Australia (vicinity of 35° 20.071' South latitude, 138° 28.703' East longitude)
