Eltinge Garden.—A delighfful small formal city garden in Spanish style, like thehouse, to which it forms a most admirable complement and setting. Containing about anacre of ground, and though only recently planted, this garden is most eminently success-ful in plan, massing of plants, arrangement of walks, fountain, pool and pergola. It offersmore harmony and restful effect to the visitor than many of the large estates and gardensviewed by the jury. It seemed that here landscape art had been carried to a very highpoint. The choice of plants is particularly appropriate and adapted to the production ofthe effect desired. This is quite in contrast with the museum of many varieties ideawhich has been so ruinous to the art of gardening in America. There is much hope formore real small garden design when a development as simple as this can be done so well.
