I can not.refrain from pointing out with unconcealed satisfaction that the City THE ARCHITFXT AND ENGINEER 103 Hall will be neither on the main street of the town nor on the axis ofanything. The so-called Street in Spain lies across de la Guerra street, at theside and rear of the old de la Guerra house, and touching or embracingthe Patio, already so charmingly restored by Mr. Craig. It will consistof a street or alley, and a court behind the de la Guen-a house, borderedby shops, studios, and the like, and communicating through to the streetat the rear, where it will open upon the old Lobero theatre now beingrestored by Mr. Smith. The well known de la Guerra house, as well asthe other adobe relics remaining on the site, will be incorporated into thescheme. ^ / ■fcS*>y- *■

SANTA BARBARAJames Osborne Craig, Architect The execution of this project will give Santa Barbara one of themost beautiful and unique attractions of any Californian—or American-city. Not its least commendable phase is its naturalness, its logic. It isunblighted by the specious exposition spirit which so readily invadessuch undertakings and renders them unsufferable shams. It is not anarbitrary and useless concoction, but a valid restoratit)n. It is to beexecuted to make the town lovelier for its own inhabitants, not as auseless spectacle for the gaping tourist. Mr. Craigs friends have recog-nized his efforts to restore to Santa Barbara its heritage.
