Photo by r.iiJgi PATIO. RESIDENCE OF JOHN G. HATFIELD. BERKELEY ARTHUR F. DLIDMAN. ARCHITECT THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER JULY 1933VOLUME 114NUMBER ONE I LIKE HOUSES-SOME OF EM! s4. RECENT adver-tisement informed me that Trifles makeperfection, but perfection is no trifle. Isthere an architect who has not. at sometime or other, feh onsurveying a complet-ed house — If only they had not insist-ed on that wall pa-per, or Why didI let them insistthat the stairs bethus. or yet Toobad I couldnt talk em out of that greentrim. An architect faceseach new commis-sion for a house ■^ntha feeling of adven-ture. Here may bethe job that will cul-minate in the idealhome. While occa-sionally he may dis-cover a problem that.no matter how skill-ful he may be, nomatter how cunning-ly he plan or scheme.
Text Appearing After Image:
by ARTHUR F. DUDMAN Architect seemingly defying all the resurces of hiscraft, there are more often, I hope, housesfrom his board that seem from their veryconception to be conspiracies toward per-fection. Not that he*^ lowers these high standards in judginghis own work, for Iam sure that thearchitect is more in-clined toward harshcriticism here thanhis clients, but rath-er he finds that thesehouses have moredetails of his fond-est dreams thanmany others. Thatis, the orientation,e.xposure, relation ofroom to room, detailof eaves and sash, the entrance, thechimney, etc.—allare good but in ad-dition he knows thatthe state of mutualunderstanding withhis client—the meet-ing of the minds— RESIDENCE OF JOHN G.
