rkers for the heavy volume ofconstruction expected in 1947 was recently urgedby Douglas Whitlock, chairman of the BuildingProducts Institute. There need be no shortage of workers to buildhomes and other structures if the apprentice train-ing program is expanded and young men are in-terested in the building trades, Whitlock said. Fully one-third more workers will be needed in1947 than were available last year if the $19 to $20billion of anticipated construction is to be accom-plished this year, Whitlock pointed out. Additional workers are needed in every majorbuilding trade, both because relatively few youngmen entered the various trades during the depres-sion and war years and because many of theunion members are reaching retirement age,Whitlock concluded.
