rom the tumor cell the old doctrinethat the tumor cell is the only para-site falls to the ground, so far atleast as relates to chicken sarcomasand presumptively to all sarcomas. What this agent may be no one knows. In 1912 Rous spoke of the causalagent as ultra microscopic in some, perhaps in all, of its forms and un-doujtedly a living organism (Proc.Amer. Phil. Soc). In 1913 Rousand Murphy sp?ak of the agent morecautiously as probably a living organ-ism. The agent or virus has the followingproperties: It does not attack epithel-ium. It is destroyed by tissue autoly-sis, by 50 per cent alcohol, by 2 percent phenol, by saponin in high dilu-tions, and by chloroform and toluol injuch quantities as are destructive to bac-teria. It is destroyed by temperaturesabove 53 C, and will endure onlya little more heat than the tumor cell.It resists long drying. It stands freez-ing and thawing well. It withstands50 per cent glycerin for at least a 301 TWENTIETH CEXTURY ADVAXCES IX CAXCER RESEARCH-SMITH

302 month. It will not pass a porcelain(Chamberland) filter or a dialyzingmembrane. It will pass through mostBerkefeld V-cylinders and many Berk-efeld N-cylinders, but is retained bymost of the fine-textured W-cylinders.It is not destroyed by arsenic com-pounds. Ultra violet light destroysthe tumor cells without destroying thecausal agent. X-rays have little effecteither on the agent or the sarcoma cells. These various features seem sufficient toidentify it as a living organism m distinctionfrom a ferment. (Rous, I.e., p. 204.) Growth or the tumor, dissemination, injuryto the host, immune processes all are referableto these cells suddenly endowed with newproperties. (Rous, I.e., p. 204.) During the last three years more than athousand fowls, with or without the tumor, have been kept together in close quarters, yetno instance of natural transmission has beenobserved. (Rous, I.e., p. 205.) In conclusion it should be stated thai theexperiments with chicken sarcoma have notyielded a method
