On November 3, 1914, Washington voters approved a statewide initiative to prohibit the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages by a count of 189,840 to 171,208. Prohibition law took effect in Washington state in 1916 - three years before a federal amendment was passed.

Prohibition Increases Drunkenness. With more than half the people of the United States living in prohibition territory, the annual report of the U.S. Commissioner of Internal Revenue shows the consumption of all kinds of liquor to be increasing. For 1912: 187,571,808 gallons. For 1913: 193,606,258. Increase distilled liquors: 6,034,450 gallons. Prohibition does not prohibit, but it robs states, counties and communities of revenue...Register, work and vote against Initiative measure No. 3.
