Description |
Deutsch: Das im Mai 1945 stark beschädigte Fragment ist das Hauptstück der Marientod-Darstellung, die Arnolfo di Cambio als Teil eines Marienzyklus für das rechte Bogenfeld der alten, 1587 abgebrochenen Fassade des Florentiner Domes geschaffen hat. Eine zugehörige Doppelbüste zweier Apostel befindet sich ebenfalls in Berlin.
Die plastische Qualität der unbeschädigt gebliebenen Halbfigur des Apostels Johannes mit dem an hellenistische Skulptur erinnernden Kopf, sowie der den gesamten Marmorblock kennzeichnende monumentale Charakter der Form erzeugen eine Erhabenheit, die das Fragment, trotz des zerstörten Mariengesichtes, noch immer zu einem der großartigsten Werke der italienischen Kunstgeschichte macht.
Italiano: dormitio virginis con frammento di teste, dalla facciata di sm del fiore In passato la scultura e' stata ritenuta parte di un gruppo con San Cristoforo che porta Gesu' Bambino (Catalogo del museo, 1891) o come Simeone e Gesu' (Poggi, 1904). La Becherucci per prima ha identificato il pezzo con le teste di Cristo e de ll'anima della Madonna proponendolo come facente parte della 'Dormitio Virginis' secondo l'iconografia di origine bizantina sul portale sud della an tica facciata del Duomo. Il Salmi confermo' l'identificazione sia in base al disegno del Poccetti del 1587 che in riferimento a un rilievo nella chiesa della Tomba ad Adria di Michele da Firenze, derivazione da quello dell a facciata del Duomo fiorentino. La qualita' piu' scadente di questa scult ura frammentaria rispetto alle altre provenienti dalla facciata ha reso la critica concorde nell'attribuzione ad un aiuto di Arnolfo. Le altre parti rimaste della 'Dormitio' sono la Madonna e due Apostoli gia' Berlino Est (quasi distrutti nella guerra), una testa di Apostolo gia' all'Opera del D uomo (perduta nella alluvione) e una testa barbuta oggi al Bargello. |
