Summary edit

Description
English: Arnos Grove Underground Station, 6 April 2023. The station was opened in September 1932, on the 1932-33 extension of the Piccadilly Line from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters. It was designed by Charles Holden, consultant architect to the Underground Electric Railways of London, in European Streamline Moderne style, this particular station being of his ‘drum’ variety as opposed to his box or cube style. It is said that Holden was inspired by Stockholm City Library although his assistant, Charles Hutton, said it was based on the groundsman’s lodge of Midhurst Sanatorium, for which Holden’s practice was responsible. Quite a contrast in inspiration!

After construction had started, Holden’s first Moderne station at Sudbury Town was showing various faults in its construction such a leaking concrete roof which was discolouring the brickwork so Holden left it to Hutton to change the construction methods of Arnos Grove as it was being built, a complicated task which he successfully undertook. All subsequent Holden stations employed the same methods. The platform arrangements have two island platforms and three tracks. The station is listed Grade II*.
