. — Mr. Colcord, he said, it was a fair contract between us. You agreedto let me take my pick of seven cows. I am here, according to agreement, with the cash. Ill havethat cow, or none. Well, if I must, I must, said the old man; but my wife will cry her eyes out; and he flungopen the cow-house. Charlie felt so sure that this was the best cowof the herd, that he never stopped to examine herclosely, asked no questions, didnt even take holdof her teats, to see if she milked easy, or to ex-amine the quality of the milk, but put a rope onher head, and drove her off, congratulating him-self, all the way along, that he had outwitted theold sneak. • Guess Uncle Isaac wont say any more aboutbought wit, thought he. Couldnt have donebetter than that himself It was about the middle of the afternoon whenCharlie reached home. At the usual time hiswife went to the barn to milk, and began with thenew comer. She has got nice teats, and milks easy, at anyrate, said Mrs. Bell. /I \ m \\\\i^i\i(\viHii

DEAR-BOUGHT WIT. 233 The words were scarcely out of her mouthwhen the cow gave the pail a kick so vicious as tosend it spinning over the floor, spattering her withmilk. It is because she is in a strange place, and isafraid of a stranger, said Mrs. Bell; and, holdingthe pail in one hand, she continued to milk withthe other. The cow began to kick, first with oneleg and then the other, without an instants inter-mission, so that to milk was impossible. Charlie, who was in the barn-yard, milking theother cows, now came to the rescue. I neversaw a cow I couldnt milk, he said; and takingup one of her fore legs, fastened it to the rackwith a rope. Kick now, if you can. Placingthe pail on the floor, he began to milk with bothhands; but the vicious brute, springing from thefloor, fell over upon him, spilling the milk, break-ing the bail of the pail, upsetting Charlies milking-stool, and leaving him at full length on the floor, innot the most amiable mood (for his wife could notrefrain from laugarthurbrownyoung00kell
