Transcription: 249 Miles from Cairo. 229 miles from Cairo. The old sacred name of the town was Pa-Anub town of the wolf headed Anubis hence its greek name of Lycopolis. Its secular name was Saut. In the hills seen on the horizon are the tombs of the Priests and numberless holes in the rocks once filled with mummies of the Jackal for this with the Uraeus snake flaunted on the standard of this nome. the hills are now strewn with skulls and bones of the Jackals. The view from it is very fine, Plotinus (Neo Platonic) lived here in the Second Century- From the beginning of the IVth Century Christianity was dominant in the town. The pious John of Lycopolis lived in a cave here, "saint and prophet" of time of Theodosius. A flourising American Mission Station is at present doing good work chiefly amount the Copts. The red pottery of Assiut is its chief article of merchandize.
